World Sight Day 2024
On 10 October 2024, a public awareness program was organized in PGICH on the occasion of World Sight Day. This time the theme of World Sight day is "Love Your Eyes Kids". On this occasion, information was given on how to take care of children's eyes. Dr. Divya, Additional Professor of Ophthalmology, told that the care of children's eyes starts from pregnancy itself and the mother should take nutritious food and avoid diseases because this can affect the development of the eyes and at birth, children may suffer from cataract or abnormally developed eyes. After the birth of the child, eyes should be examined within 72 hours so that cataract or any other eye disease can be detected on time.
In prematurely born children , retina is not formed properly and there are chances of retinopathy and prematurity, which needs timely diagnosis and treatment .When the child grows up, his eyes should be examined once in 6 to 8 weeks, after that the eyes should be examined between one to three years to diagnose refractive error , amblyopia and other anomalies. Testing of child between 3 and 5 years of age can be done by objective and subjective refraction and abnormalities in vision can be detected along with other eye diseases.
Nowadays, increase in screen time is becoming a rampant issue. This is causing myopia and dryness in the eyes of children. So screen time needs to be curtailed and outdoor activity needs to be increased.
Dr. AK Singh, Director, PGICH stressed on nutritious food intake and cutailing screen time. Also, regular eye check ups in children are necessary for timely diagnosis and management of ocular disorders in children.
On this occasion, students of Kailash Institute of Nursing did posters, models and role plays . Role plays highlighted the importance of decreasing screen time, regular eye check up, adherence to glasses use and alongside protection of eye from firecrackers during Diwali was displayed. On this occasion, Dr. Vikrant Sharma, Dr. Divya Jain from Department of Ophthalmology and Dr. AK Singh, CMS, MS and Director of PGICH were present.
